Speaker: Apostle Janes Olum
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:1–13

Introduction
Spiritual gifts are spiritual endowments or abilities given to believers in Christ. They are not meant for personal glory or benefit but for the edification and profit of the church (1 Corinthians 12:7).
- The Source of Spiritual Gifts
– The source of spiritual gifts is the Holy Spirit.
– They are called “gifts of the Holy Spirit” because He alone gives them (1 Corinthians 12:11).
– The Holy Spirit must dwell in us for there to be an outward manifestation of the gifts.
– From within us, He distributes the gifts as He wills.
– The gifts are not reserved for a special category of people but for every Spirit-filled believer.
- The Nature of Spiritual Gifts
– Spiritual gifts cannot be purchased (Acts 8:20).
– Their manifestation is visible but they are freely given by God’s grace.
– They are received, not earned (Romans 12:6).
- A warning: Wrong motives in seeking Gifts
Acts 8:9–24 tells us about Simon the sorcerer:
– He amazed people with magic before his salvation.
– After believing in Christ, he was impressed by the miracles and gifts demonstrated by the apostles.
– Simon offered money to purchase the gift of the Spirit.
– His desire seemed good, but his motive was wrong.
– Peter rebuked him: his heart was poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity (Acts 8:23).
Lesson: Ensure your motives align with the will of God when desiring spiritual gifts.
Ephesians 4:31 reminds us: “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander be put away from you.”
- Qualification for receiving the Gifts
– The recipient must be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.
– John 1:12–13: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
– The gifts are for those who are born of the Spirit.
- The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
– 1 Corinthians 12:7: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
– The gifts are given for:
– The common good
– Service to others
– Edification of the church (Ephesians 4:12)
– The gifts should operate within the body of Christ.
– Matthew 10:8: “Freely you have received, freely give.”
Conclusion
Spiritual gifts are given by grace, distributed by the Holy Spirit, and intended for the growth and edification of the church. As believers, we must ensure our hearts and motives are pure, seek the gifts with humility, and use them to serve others in love.
